Pinetop-Lakeside by Chris Paxman

Dubbed the alps of Arizona, Alpine’s Swiss-like setting – still a secret to many – will have you blinking in disbelief. This high-elevation, forested village offers a serene, all-season vacation experience.

Right Now

Whether you prefer an active or laid-back mountain holiday, Alpine opens the door for high-altitude adventure.

The communities of the White Mountains are special. For starters, they’re blissfully uncrowded. And the setting – in the panoramic evergreens of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest – is spectacular. But Alpine offers something else that’s all too rare in our busy lives: an unhurried opportunity to reconnect to ourselves, our families, and our friends in nature.

Originally settled in 1870 at the headwaters of the San Francisco River, much of the unspoiled beauty remains. Kayakers and boaters will find 11 lakes and 200 miles of trout streams within a 30-mile radius. Birders are blessed with more than 100 species to spot. Dark, clear skies make for memorable stargazing. And winter snowfall thrills snowshoers, cross-county skiers, and families looking to build a snowman.

Camping options are plentiful, but for multi-generational family comfort, the Sprucedale Guest Ranch offers home-cooked meals, horseback riding, and Western dancing.
